One of the complaints I hear regularly about SPS is that the system of topics, areas, and sites is confusing and difficult to navigate. This confusion is caused by several factors that are unique to the way in which SPS was designed and built by Microsoft. Therefore, it is important to understand the design philosophy behind SPS before we can attempt to improve its navigation system. Technical people tend to think in highly organized hierarchies represented by tree views. This structured approach is valuable when analyzing and solving engineering problems, but often leads to a rigid user interface design. This thinking is so strong that developers initially assume that topics, areas, and sites must have a hierarchical relationship.
