market move. All of a sudden, market experts are coming out of the woodwork talking about this particular market move. It seems everyone is an expert, and some inexperienced investors can t help but fall for the trap. There is truth in another old saying, By the time it gets on the news, the move is probably over because it is most likely factored into the market. In a bullish market, the buyers have already bought, and there are no more new buyers coming in to play except those latecomers who buy the top generally the inexperienced trader or investor or broker who doesn t want to miss the opportunity. The simple laws of supply and demand dictate that prices cannot sustain extreme levels for long. During the 2000 Bush/Gore election campaign, I recall many television financial stations interviewing so-called experts on how the markets would react if Bush were elected. The debates went on and on. The general consensus was that, if a Republican president were elected, it would be bullish for stocks and bearish for bonds. We all know the outcome of the election, but the outcome of the predictions certainly did not materialize. The point is: Be careful what you believe when it comes to another person s opinion about price direction in the markets.

infrastructure [13] Another example of village networks is presented in reference 14, in which the Wizzy digital courier service provides disconnected Internet access to people/students in remote villages of South Africa A courier on a motorbike, equipped with a USB storage device, travels from a village to a large city which has high-speed Internet connectivity Typically, it takes a few hours for the courier to travel from the village to the city There are many different terminologies used for DTNs in the literature, such as eventual connectivity, space-time routing, partially connected, transient connection, opportunistic networking, extreme networks, and end-to-end communication The data unit in DTNs can be a message, a packet, or bundle, which is de ned as a number of messages to be delivered together For simplicity, throughout this chapter, we use bundles, messages, and packets interchangeably.

The rest of this chapter de nes and discusses each one of these components by showing, analyzing, and comparing the main methods used by each one of them. This way, in Section 11.2 the rst component, the Distance/Angle Estimation, and its techniques are studied. Section 11.3 presents the second component, the Position Computation, also with some of its techniques. The third component, the Localization Algorithm, is discussed in Section 11.4 along with some known localization algorithms proposed in the literature. Finally, Section 11.5 presents a summary along with some concluding remarks.

BusinessRefinery Java Barcode Reader is a Java library that can read 1D and 2D barcode images, and decoded to barcode message. It can be used.

The characteristics of DTNs are very different from the traditional Internet in that the latter implicitly has some well-known assumptions: (1) continuous connectivity, (2) very low packet loss rate, and (3) reasonably low propagation delay DTNs do not satisfy all of these assumptions, and sometimes none The challenges in designing ef cient protocols in the DTNs are extremely long delay (up to days), frequent disconnection, and opportunistic or predicable connections Consequently, the existing protocols developed for the wired Internet are not able to handle the data transmission ef ciently in DTNs In DTNs, end-to-end communication using TCP/IP protocol may not work, because packets whose destinations cannot be found are usually dropped If packet dropping is too severe, TCP eventually ends the session UDP provides no reliable service and cannot hold and forward New protocols and algorithms need to be developed.

11.2 DISTANCE/ANGLE ESTIMATION The distance/angle estimation is obtained by identifying the distance or angle between two nodes. Such estimates constitute an important component of the localization systems, because they are used by the position computation and also by the localization algorithm. Different methods can be used to estimate such information. Some of them are very accurate, but with higher costs (in terms of hardware, energy, and processor resources), while others are not accurate, but already available on most sensor nodes. In the following sections, some of the main methods used by the localization systems to estimate distances/angles will be studied. These methods include RSSI, ToA/TDoA, AoA, and the communication range. Finally, some general comments will be made regarding this component and its methods of estimation. 11.2.1 Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) RSSI derives the distance between two nodes based on the strength of the signal received by one of the nodes. As depicted in Figure 11.3, a sender node sends a signal with a determined strength that gets reduced as this signal is propagated. The greater

Figure 11.3. Decrease in the signal strength. The signal is sent with a determined strength that decreases, theoretically, proportionally with the square of the distance. In the real world, a number of factors collaborate in the faster and varied decrease in this signal strength.

There are several different types of DTN due to their different characteristics For instance, the satellite trajectories in example (a) are predictable, while the movement of a solider or tank in example (c) may be random Therefore, for different types of DTN, different solutions may need to be proposed Recently, the DTN research group under the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) has proposed several research documents including a DTN architecture [10, 15 17] This architecture addresses communication issues in extreme networks or networks encompassing a wide range of architectures The architecture is a network of regional networks, with an overlay on top of a transport layer or on top of these regional networks It provides key services, such as in-network data storage and retransmission, interoperable naming, and authenticated forwarding.
